Emirates Geriatrics Society Holds First CME-Accredited Meeting on Influenza Burden and High-Dose Flu Protection
On May 12, 2025, the Emirates Geriatrics Society (EGS) successfully hosted its first CME-accredited scientific meeting at the Holiday Inn – Dubai Festival City, focusing on the pressing issue of influenza in older adults and the importance of high-dose flu vaccination.
The session began with a keynote presentation by Dr. Salwa Al Suwaidi, President of the Emirates Geriatrics Society and Director & Consultant at the Senior Happiness Centre – Dubai Health. Dr. Al Suwaidi spoke passionately about the significant burden influenza poses on the elderly population, highlighting the increased risks of complications, hospitalisation, and mortality. She stressed the need for heightened awareness and tailored vaccination strategies for older adults.
Dr. Tamer Farid, Consultant Geriatrician at Dubai Health, followed with an evidence-based presentation on the immunisation schedules recommended for older individuals. He outlined the robust data supporting the use of high-dose influenza vaccines, which are proven to offer superior protection for seniors, particularly those with chronic health conditions.
This landmark event provided an essential platform for healthcare professionals to explore the latest research, share best practices, and reinforce the importance of preventive care in geriatrics.
